A Heartbreaking Shift a Single Year Has Caused in America

In late October 2024, the situation was entirely different. Before the American presidential vote, reflective citizens could admit the country's significant faults – its injustices and imbalance – however they continued to perceive it as the United States. A free society. A land where legal governance meant something. A state guided by a honorable and ethical public servant, despite his elderly years and growing weakness.

Currently, in late October 2025, countless Americans hardly identify the land we reside in. Individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants are collected and forced into transport, sometimes refused legal rights. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for an obscene event space. Donald Trump is harassing his adversaries or supposed enemies and demanding the justice department surrender a huge total of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are being sent to US urban areas under fabricated reasons. The military command, relabeled the Defense Ministry, has practically freed itself of regular press examination during its expenditure of potentially totaling close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Institutions, legal practices, news companies are buckling from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are handled as nobility.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its quarter-millennium anniversary as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the brink into authoritarianism and extremism,” an American historian, commented recently. “Ultimately, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred in this country.”

One awakes to new horrors. And it is difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost we are, and how quickly it occurred.

However, we understand that the leader was properly voted in. Following his deeply disturbing first term and following the cautions linked to the awareness of the conservative plan – despite the leader directly stated openly he would be a dictator only on the first day – a majority of citizens chose him over the other candidate.

As terrifying as the present situation is, it's more daunting to realize that we have only been three-quarters of a year under this leadership. Where will an additional three years of this decline position us? And what if that timeframe transforms into a more extended duration, because there is no one to limit this leader from opting that a third term is necessary, possibly for security concerns?

Granted, all is not lost. There will be congressional elections next year that could establish an alternate political equilibrium, should Democrats regain the Senate or House of the legislature. There are elected officials who are trying to exert a degree of oversight, such as representatives who are initiating an inquiry into the attempted fund seizure from the justice department.

And a national vote in the next cycle could start us down the road to recovery exactly as the previous vote put us on this regrettable path.

There exist countless citizens marching in public spaces throughout communities, similar to recent last weekend in the No Kings rallies.

A former official, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the US is rising”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or throughout the sixties activism or throughout the seventies crisis.

In those instances, the unstable nation ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he knows the signs of that revival and observes it occurring at present. As evidence, he references the widespread marches, the extensive, multi-faction opposition to a television host's removal and the largely united rejection by reporters to sign military mandates they only publish authorized information.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists inactive before certain corruption grows too toxic, some action so offensive toward public welfare, certain violence so disruptive, that the giant is forced other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries persist: is the US able to return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its position in the world and its devotion to constitutional order?

Or must we acknowledge that the 250-year-old experiment worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My cynical mind indicates that the second option is accurate; that all may indeed be lost. My positive feelings, however, tells me that we have to attempt, through all methods we can.

For me, working in journalism analysis, that’s about encouraging reporters to commit, more thoroughly, to their mission of holding power to account. For different individuals, it may be engaging with political races, or planning demonstrations, or discovering methods to defend electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we lived in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or after another term? The reality is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to strive to not give up.
