Doris Included in Irish Selection But McCarthy Omitted
Returning head coach the Ireland coach has named captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn Tests, however lock McCarthy is absent.
The captain, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.
Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first Lions Test against Australia in the summer.
Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash are not included due to injury, and full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new member in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "cover".
Following facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, as the two players set to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with Farrell deciding not to selecting the province's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international victories over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of centre options. Osborne is another option in the centres, though the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in two of Leinster's URC league games so far and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Henderson returns after sitting out the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris if the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on Monday before flying to Chicago on the following day.
