European Right-Wing Setting the Political Agenda, Study Reveals

Established parties in power are more and more enabling the far right to dictate the public discourse, according to a recent study carried out in Germany.

Researchers discovered that this phenomenon has inadvertently benefited radical groups by validating their ideas and spreading them to a broader audience.

Study Based on Over 20 Years of News Reporting

The findings, published in the academic journal on political studies, utilized an computerized content review of over 520,000 articles from a half-dozen German publications.

Capital-based researchers observed that as the far right shifted from marginal topics in the 1990s era to core subjects like integration and immigration, mainstream political groups increasingly adjusted their communication in response.

This adaptation boosted the dissemination of these ideas and indicated to voters that such positions were acceptable.

Implications for Democratic Systems

"Public discourse by mainstream parties is crucial in the electoral success of the far right," explained a political sociologist involved in the study.

"This factor has been overlooked," she noted.

The impact was noticeable even when conventional parties were condemning the radical faction. "You're still giving them attention," the expert remarked. "Our core argument is that because we live in such a battle for attention, this focus is key."

Mainstreaming Phenomenon Across the Continent

While the research was centered around the German context, this mainstreaming phenomenon is likely to affect countries throughout Europe.

"This is frequently observed in German and British media," said another co-author. "The far right makes a statement and everyone starts talking about it for one week."

"Even if you're opposing it, you're repeating it," he added.

Hardening of Public Rhetoric

At certain points, political figures have also toughened their language to align with that of the far right.

In a recently published discussion, a former German chancellor called for widespread deportations and pushed for them to happen "more frequently and rapidly."

Comparable examples can be observed throughout Europe, as elected officials from countries ranging from the UK to the French Republic embrace the language of the far right, especially on migration.

This has created an feedback loop that was unthinkable a ten years prior.

Central Problem: Who Dictates the Narrative?

"{If you're a centrist party and you are talking about cultural issues – migration, integration – in a way that is dictated by the rhythm of the radical right, that's the essence of agenda setting," clarified a researcher.

Some parties have taken additional measures, seeking to copy the hardline platform of the far right, despite research indicates that doing so leads voters to vote for the far right.

Progressive Impact and Voter Awareness

The scope of data gathered revealed that the impact of radical parties had been progressive and had increased with the passage of time.

"Public perception doesn't change from one day to another," commented a co-author. "However, when you encounter this pessimistic narrative around immigration frequently, and it is being spread not only by far-right parties but also, for instance, by established parties, then of course this storyline gains more traction."

Requirement for Mainstream Parties to Develop Their Distinct Discourses

The research highlighted the necessity for established political parties to develop their distinct discourses, particularly on topics such as migration and assimilation, rather than continuously trailing after the radical right.

"It's like a dance," explained one researcher. "When the leader is radical and you're reacting to it, you lose the ability to choose which music should be heard."
