The Pakistani team Stops South Africa's 10-Test Victory Run.

Cricket match action

Shaheen Afridi secured a quartet of wickets in the final innings following going wicketless in the initial session.

Opening Test, the Gaddafi Stadium (day four)

Pakistan 378 (Imam-ul-Haq 93, Agha 93; Senuran Muthusamy 6-117) & 167 (Babar 42; the spinner 5-57)

The visitors 269 (De Zorzi 104; Noman Ali 6-112) & 183 (Dewald Brevis 54; Shaheen Afridi 4-33, Noman Ali 4-79)

The hosts secured a 93-run victory

The national team brought an end to world champions the Proteas' unbeaten run by achieving a 93-run margin victory in an entertaining and competitive first Test in Lahore.

The Proteas, whose 10-match unbeaten run in the longest format culminated in victory over the Aussies in the WTC final in the month of June, were bowled out for 183 in pursuit of 277.

Having resumed on 51-2, they lost century-maker De Zorzi lbw to left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi to the third delivery of the day to shift the tightly balanced chase in the home team's favor.

Left-arm spinner Noman Ali, who claimed 10 wickets for 191 runs in the match, dismissed Stubbs for 2 and clean bowled Brevis, who offered some resistance with a run-a-ball 54.

Off-spinner Sajid Khan also took advantage of significant spin to end opener Rickelton's stay - he lasted 145 balls for 45 - and Afridi returned in the post-lunch session to dismiss the lower order with a impressive exhibition of reverse-swing bowling.

He had Verreynne lbw for 19 and bowled Subrayen and Rabada to secure the victory.

It was both sides' first match of the 2025-27 Test championship cycle and propels Pakistan directly into the number two spot behind table-toppers Australia.

The win was built around key performances of 93 by opener Imam-ul-Haq and, crucially, number seven Salman Agha which lifted them to 378.

From there spinners Noman Ali and Sajid took advantage of helpful home pitches, as they did in their series victory over England the previous year, to maintain their advantage.

The next and final Test starts on October 20.
